Sit Back, Relax, Travel Back in Timeand enjoy a massive collection of OTR Westerns! The Old West....It was between the end of the Civil War in 1865 through to about 1890. A legendary period of around 25 years, in an area spanning the vast reaches west of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Americans settled 430 million acres of land during this period while overwhelming the indigenous Native Americans in the so-called Indian Wars. Ten new states entered the Union, bringing the total number of states to forty-eight by 1912. Over the course of just a few decades commercial empires in mining of gold and silver, farming, and cattle emerged. It is probably safe to say that for most modern people the Old West is not really a time or a place but a state of mind. On the radio, the westerns were the stories of heroes and gunfighters, of bandits and marshals (or rangers). Many were based in the books of writers like Zane Grey, others in the pulp fiction of the 20s and 30s. Even more western radio stars were movie stars of the time: Gene Autry, Tom Mix, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy. Sit back listen and imagine a return to the days and adventures of the old west.
